Biomechanical Foot Assessment
A pedorthic biomechanical foot assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of the feet, lower limbs, and gait, conducted by our pedorthist to identify any abnormalities, imbalances, or conditions that may be causing pain, discomfort, or mobility issues. This assessment is key in developing a treatment plan, which may include footwear recommendations, custom orthotics, modified footwear, and custom orthopaedic footwear to improve foot function and overall mobility.
The assessment typically involves several components:

Understanding the patient's medical history, symptoms, lifestyle, and any specific complaints or areas of discomfort.
Observing the patient's feet, ankles, and lower limbs while they are standing and sitting. This includes looking for structural abnormalities, skin conditions, or alignment issues.
Analysing the way the patient walks to identify any irregularities in their stride, foot placement, and how their feet interact with the ground.
Palpation (touching) of the feet and lower limbs to check for tenderness, swelling, flexibility, joint function, and muscle strength.
Measuring foot structure and alignment, including arch height, foot size, and any differences between the feet.
Assessing the flexibility and range of motion of the joints in the feet and lower limbs.
Utilising specialised equipment to measure the distribution of pressure across the foot during standing and movement. We utilise pressure mats and/or in-shoe pressure measurement systems depending on the case.
Evaluating the type of footwear worn regularly by the patient to determine if it contributes to their condition or symptoms.
3D scanning may be used to create a precise model of the foot, which can be used for custom orthotic and footwear fabrication.
If necessary, additional tests such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound may be recommended to further investigate specific issues.
The results of this assessment inform the development of a personalised treatment plan, which may include recommendations for custom orthotics, modifications to existing footwear, and custom-made orthopaedic shoes. The goal is to alleviate pain, correct biomechanical issues, and improve overall foot function and quality of life.
